The slow death of Windows in my world

I've never been a huge fan of Windows. In the old days I moved from MS-DOS to Windows 3.1 to using IBM OS/2 3.0. I was happy, OS/2 was decades ahead of anything with a Microsoft logo, then the fallout of the assassination of OS/2 by both knuckleheads at IBM and by Lucifer at Microsoft. I was forced to return to using Windows 95. I never really took up using Windows 98 nor ME (thankfully), having jumped over to using Windows NT, and enjoying a little of a better system than the run of the mill end user Windows 9x crap. With the much broader widescale influx of the Internet, I regained a lot of the toolsets I loved using with OS/2 including REXX. I rarely used IE and much preferred using Netscape before the advent of the Mozilla project. Finally came XP, which I adopted as my primary OS as I started to play around with the various *nixes (BSD and Linux). My first departure, was using Red Hat for a period of time. But for compatibility reasons I kept a dual boot of Windows, for times when I needed to use it. I eventually switched to OpenSuse, as it is a much smoother and nicer than RH, my early tries of Fedora was not pleasant so I avoided it. The early Ubuntu distros seems very incomplete to me, as I liked having out-of-the-box development tools.

Eventually, the other distros became more usable, and I have slowly adopted more Linux versions into my systems. Now, of the computers in my home, few run Windows. There only about 4 running Windows and 4 running Linux and I am favoring Linux more and more, weeding out the distros that are not stable enough for me. And some of the Windows machines may eventually die out in favor of Linux.

Currently, the systems that I have are as follows:

Old AthlonXP Desktop: Ubuntu 10.04

My Niece's Sempron Desktop: Windows XP.

My Opteron Desktop: OpenSuse 11.3

My Phenom Desktop: Dualboot OpenSuse 11.3 and Windows XP-64

My Dell Laptop: Dualboot Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit and Windows XP

My Netbook: Windows 7

Of these, it a matter of time till I replace Windows 7 on my netbook with a linux distro (having Jolicloud crash on my laptop after an update, means Jolicloud will not be an option). So most likely it will be Ubuntu Netbook Edition.

The only reason I have Windows XP on my Dell Laptop is that I sometimes need a 32bit Windows system, to use a crappy video capture device that lacks drivers for any other operating system (including other versions of Windows). But eventually, when I no longer need to keep that backward compatibility, I see myself abandoning windows on it too.

The only reason I have Windows around anyway is for photoshop (Gimp is not nearly as functional) and the ability to log into Second Life easily. But as soon as better linux ports or support is available, I see myself less inclined to keep using any version of Windows. I've yet to find a reason to adopt Windows 7 as mostly everything else I use, are on Linux.

Getting Squeak Smalltalk to work for all users on Windows

So I installed Squeak, on my windows XP system to dabble in Smalltalk again. This means the administrator seems to be the only user able to use the programming environment. This was not satisfactory to me, as I would like to access it from any of my other accounts including a limited access account that I use daily because I used the restrictions in my favor and use Run As when I want to officially install something new. Also, I have other accounts where I like to access the environment. With this in mind I also wanted each account to access it own squeak image.

To solve this, I had to do some manual reconfiguration of Squeak on my system and I am posting this for anyone who dabbles in Squeak on multiple user accounts on a windows machine, as it is easily modifiable to work on any version of Windows.

Step 1: Move the squeak application folder to somewhere all users can access it, either in "All Users" or "Program Files", this will ensure that accounts that are not allowed to view a particular account such as the Administrator, can access the executables.

Step 2: Create a work folder for each user for squeak, for example. "My Documents\Squeak" and in them put the squeak .image .change and .sources files.

Step 3: To get it all working together, you need to create a new lnk in your start menu. To be precise this would be in the start menu for All Users. The link should target to the squeak .exe file that you moved in Step 1. The working folder, or start up folder however should be modified to something like "%HOMEPATH%\My Documents\Squeak". This will ensure that the program will find the local .image .change and .sources files for that account.

Step 4: Modify the properties of the .exe for squeak and the .lnk file to allow them to be used by non administrators. This is an important step if using a limited account to run squeak as even if the link was in the start menu, it would not run with that user unless he was allowed to use it. You will find this option in the Compatibility tab.

That's it. Now you can use Squeak on any user account and independently of any other user on the same machine.

If you like all users to use the same .image .change and .sources files, you need to put them and reference that folder, where all users can access and modify the files. Such as a shared folder.

So I am cleaning out a room and I spot this butterfly on the gate, so went for my camera. It seemsed he stayed there forever and I got really close for some great shots. Looked up the name and found out it is the Giant Swollowtail, a butterfly more common in North America.

A lot of media and news services file false claims against videos they don't like, breaking the fair use laws. What to do is to file a claim against them. The following text is from the copyright law of the US to put in the claim against them.

Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. TITLE 17 . CHAPTER 1, 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use. Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

This shows that their claim against your video is false once you are not using it to profit from it but use in a legitimate use.

I've had the Platronics Voyager 510 for a time, used to work ok with my Motorola Razr, but it works a little less well with my Motorola ROKR E6. But I am not complaining about that here. What I am however is how horrible is its ergonomics. It is obvious, that it made for one persons ear which is not mine. The over ear piece and battery does not fit snug behind my ear, perhaps they wanted only people with batty ears to wear it, but it just does not fit right or comfortable without moving. Second where the ear piece defaults to is not in my ear but behind a lobe. Forcing it to my ear, only lasts for 2-5 seconds before it pops back behind my lobe. Its a rubber piece that does not stay where I want it, and because it will not hook to my ear canal opening, it makes hearing through the piece difficult as 80% of the sound is lost. I bought this because I thought the ones that hang a book off your ear would be too heavy and fall off. But it plain that the people that design these things are fucking morons.

My over the top Nissin Chow Tomato and Basil Noodles Recipe

I love spicy food. I love flavors and I love making good things better. Granted that Nissin Noodles contain a lot of salt, so I add no more salt than what it contains. This is a recipe of how I make them, full of flavor, taste and spice. Warning should be given if you can't handle spicy food, do not try making this dish.

What you will need (amount can vary according to taste.

Nissin Chow Tomato and Basil Noodles
Chopped Olives
Olive Oil
Crushed Pepper
Dry Italian Seasoning
Finely Chopped Onions
Teriyaki Sauce
Kraft Grated Parmesan Cheese

Start off by following the instructions for Nissin Chow Noodles, add to the noodles, the dry ingredients; Chopped Onions, Chopped Olives, with water to level and microwave for the specified time. Now to the noodles, add the remaining ingredients (Crushed Pepper, A little Olive Oil, a couple dashes of the Dry Italian Seasoning, a few squirts of the Teriyaki Sauce, and Parmesan Cheese) and mix well till all the ingredients are incorporated.

For even more spice serve with some hot sauce.

Now eat and enjoy a wealth of flavors in a quick and easy dish and after you tried it, you never want to have just plain noodles again.

I seen this thread in forums, and I don't want to be bothered to join a form just to comment on an issue in comics that it seems both sides are morons of the issue. They fail to understand the basis of the characters and while there some insight in some places they fail miserly to follow the logic to the end.

So I will postulate a perspective of their powers against one another. Before I begin, lets be aware that both characters draw their energy from the ebs and flows of the cosmic forces of the universe. They both are capable of transforming this energy to whatever purpose they can envisage. If needed for both creation and destruction. With Adam it is channeled through his psyche. This cannot be overlooked because this is what makes adam truly unique, his is limitless and beyond the scope of anything in existence (see Rune). The Magus (the darker version of Adam Warlock) has appeared in a couple different ways, his core being a psychological transformation of Warlock's own psyche and as the manifestation of the darker aspect within his psyche. One being, is Warlock himself transformed, and the other a aspect that became a separate being.

One of the reasons Warlock is often called upon in cosmic confrontations, is because he is a brilliant tactician and unpredictable (as Eternity has said), a wild-card that than triumph his own darker side the Magus or any other villain. The surfer in this regard is more of a tank in the battle. Norin Radd as intelligent as he is, is inferior to Adam in this regard. We also seen because of Adam uniqueness and similar powers, as well as a one time link between Adam and the Surfer, that Adam is fully capable of controlling the Silver Surfer's own surfboard.

The question of power level is a tricky issue. As we seen, Adam is indeed the mental and psyche superior to the Surfer. Generally, it normally safe to assume that the Surfer is stronger in a direct confrontation. However, we must define what incarnation of Adam we are using (and for argument I am not going to use the infinity gems as an argument). We seen that the surfer is bested by the Magus, which is a form of Adam Warlock. Adam Warlock has much untapped potential that is evident that his power set increased every time he is reborn. Which can beg the assumption that could a version of Adam Warlock exist without the Magus that can rival the direct conflict of the Silver Surfer? The possibility exists.

So to answer now the question, who would win? Adam if he started the fight would win because he would plan out just how to bring the Surfer to his knees and prepare for him. If the Surfer attacked Adam out of the blue, the Surfer would win. If it is a far future version or Magus version of Adam, then Adam will win.

So today, Avast Anti virus freaked out on me. It destroyed my installation of ZBrush, Editpad and Advanced System Care. So it forced me to do something as these are part of the toolset of important programs I use, Editpad being the most used. So I was left no choice, Uninstall Avast, but what other anti virus is there that work without freaking out my system. I am giving AVG a try. Yes, it banner-ware but if it works without being a bitch, then this might be best for use. I was a big supporter of Avast free, and would advise any user if they wanted a free anti virus to use Avast, seems I have to change my opinion and start recommending AVG. Of course, I could always tell them to get Comodo.

Adam Warlock: The End?

I do not have the current issues so I've had to resort to research, reading and so on. Seems one of my favorite characters as reached a so called end. Adam Warlock latest advent in the Marvel Universe left him transformed into the Magus, a version of himself he hoped he would not evolve into. And yet he is supposedly killed in Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, we all know a bullet could never really kill Adam Warlock nor the Magus, so it a matter of time again before the Magus shows himself in this reality since Adam has transformed into his darker self. I welcome the Magus and the Universal Church of Truth back to Marvels 616 Universe. It will indeed be interesting to see how they will be able to defend themselves against a threat like the Magus without Warlock around to save their butts, but as chaos and order have said, Adam is outside their realm of influence, his presence in the cosmic sales of things is unpredictable and his influence makes a level of uncertainty which even Eternity is uncomfortable with. I hope at the end, we have Adam reborn again after the Magus is subdued. Marvel greatest creation and under appreciated hero for me is Adam Warlock.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

As a Horror movie, they should have left this movie in the closet. There nothing movie-worthy about this horror. The acting seems unnatural, teens seem to be stereotypical druggies with sex being so casual that it is unfamiliar to most people. All except Mandy Lane, who is the lone different teen in the movie, and *SPOILER ALERT* one of the masterminds of the killings.
I must admit that the only selling point is to see Amber Heard (Mandy Lane) as she is definitely very pretty. And if one can base a movie on looking at one actress, then it worth it. But as a horror movie, this movie leaves you empty and wondering what the hell were they thinking when they made it.

My Star Trek

Enterprise like Concept

Back to a little 3D work, if Abrams can have his own Enterprise, and others can to. It is about time I have mine, so this is one of my concepts of the USS-Enterprise NCC-1701. Yes, it not the TOS Enterprise, but it has all the same concepts as the original but also some more modern curves to it. As it just a prototype concept, it probably can change at some point, especially when I get into doing the detail work for it. If I ever get around to doing that.

Star Trek

Today, I went to see Star Trek XI (2009) with a semi-complete open mind. I have to say that I both anticipated it and dreaded the renewal of the series with a new cast. Indeed seeing Nimoy as Mr. Spock trilled me to no end. I must caution that Spock is perhaps my favorite character ever in the franchise.

This movie is a complete reboot of Star Trek and in no means will violate star trek continuity as it occurs in a divergent parallel time-stream, caused by the event of the Romulan time traveling. So it does not affect any of the series canon, but can serve to develop a new canon that both similar and different than the original. Some canon were kept and some changed in this universe which makes it both similar and different, such as Kirk cheating the Kobayashi Maru test. But absent is the disharmony between Mr. Spock and his father Sarek. Mr. Spock love interest is Lt. Uhura instead of Nurse Chapel.

The movie is a complete joy ride, adapted for modern audiences. Making it an exciting and fun movie to watch. What it does lack is a lot of the heavier socio-topical issues that underpinned the Star Trek mythos. It brings back the trill of seeing the Enterprise again on the big screen, and while this is a different ship, I must admit that it indeed captures the flavor and love of the original. I cannot say if this ship can contain all the compartments found in the original, but it has a hanger, one that I thought it might have skipped from the initial first glimpses of the skip that were leaked. So, this ship seems worthy to follow the namesake of the original.

I am not going to blog any spoilers here, so if you wish to go see it, please do. It worth the price of admission. And so far is a worthy successor to the star trek franchise. What would be needed now is some more thought provoking story-lines. Which I hope will be in future sequels to this series.

If your ways and world is so great, why do these fundamentalist use cars, guns, planes, and all the other products of western invention. Granted that gunpowder or explosives are a Chinese invention, it is still not a product of Islam. So are you not hypocrites for using these western inventions, should you not go back to using the scimitars and let us in the west use our guns, rockets and other weapons, the way it should be.

If Allah (fucked be his name), is so great, why has he allowed you his people to be the assholes of the world? Is it because you can't get your noses out of your assholes long enough that you can't see how much of assholes you all are?

In the west, there is a cult called Mormonism, which by the way uses a very similar revelation story as how Mohammad got his word, just another example of the same fucked up lie propagated by false prophets when creating a false religion by a certified lunatic. As soon as I saw the Doctor Who episode "Blink", I said that girl "Sally Sparrow" is beautiful. I took an instant like to her. Her real name is Carey Hannah Mulligan, and has been in a number of movies previously. I since noticed that there are many Doctor Who fans who would like her to be the Doctor next companion (other than Martha or that vile Catherine Tate). I do agree it would be wonderful to see her as a companion but I cannot say it would happen. But the interesting thing is she is not a one-time character even though she appeared on screen in one episode (in the original story she meets the doctor many years later when she works as a spy), so it may not be far fetched that she may indeed eventually become one of the companions. If that happens it would be great, I would love to see this girl on screen on a continuous basis (but then again I do like blondes) LOL.

Ok, so I decided to put these two against each other with a simple test, to see which one can find something obscure.... me! lol. To see which can locate my website, blog or poetry. I been online for more than a decade in various sites and have left a small footprint in the online world. The end result, Google wins by a landslide... by using the keyword "Warlock's Dominion".

Test 1: "Warlock's Dominion"
Google listed my website as the first result, Ask.com returned one result and that was not even correct, as it listed wallpapers for Doro and Warlock.

Test 2: "Dion Mohammed"
Google listed my website as fourth. Ask failed as even returning a single result.

Test 3: dragonlordthunder
Google successfully found some references to me. Bebo profile, yahoo photos, and even my guestbook. Ask again fails to provide any results.

Test 4: dragonlordwarlock.com
Try using my website domain.... Google successfully found the site and other places online where I mentioned the site such as on Marvel Comics blog and even my MySpace. Ask once again fails to find any reference to me or my site.

After 4 test, I do not need to go any further, Google wins hands down and ASK.com fails like a load of horse crap. Thus ask.com is not an efficient search engine in any way or form. To compare I did the test using yahoo (to be fair).

"Warlock's Dominion" lists my website as first results too.
"Dion Mohammed" also listed my website and my blog with my site listed at position 1.
"dragonlordthunder" successfully found my guestbook, photos and blog.
"dragonlordwarlock.com" returned my website as first result as well as blogs, poetry and a lot more....

So, if ask.com is so inefficient at finding anything online, why should we even use it. Google and Yahoo both make ask.com look like chickenfeed.

The Enigma that is Adam Warlock

This is a comment that I just want to get out there...

As far as I can see, a lot of Marvel Comics and other web sites ignore part of the canon with respect to Adam Warlock. Within the Marvel Universe and the public knowledge, we accept the origin that Adam Warlock (formally Him) started out in the Beehive project as an artificial being. How much of this is true? A lot of people including Marvel accept this, but is that the whole story? The fact is it is not, during the run of the new Adam Warlock series, Warlock had to take a journey into his own psyche and during this adventure, some curious facts were revealed. Most of these are ignored at current, but since they have already been published they are now canon, even if ignored.

First we all know Adam's various aspects that exist, namely the Magus and the Goddess. One other that was revealed but have ever showed itself before is one called the "Old Woman". The interested aspect that this aspect revealed to Adam, is that he is eons of years old. A fact that contradicts the accepted canon of the Beehive story, unless one takes the view that the Beehive, did not in fact, create Adam Warlock but was instrumental into the birth of his current incarnation. Adam currently shows no memory of what he was before but the fact that they may have used something other than raw materials into the creation of Adam is a possibility. This of course leads us to ask the question, who is Adam Warlock. A question that might have been answered if Starlin is given Adam Warlock again.

This eon spanning incarnation of Adam Warlock is mostly ignored by the current Marvel publishers, and would probably be ignored in the future, but even they cannot erase the past and a canon that they will undoubtedly ignore. But a fact that true Adam Warlock fans will always ask. As we already seen, Adam in the hands of Starlin is one of the unique marriages in Marvel that showed just how great a storyteller Jim Starlin really is... Adam also being one of his important vehicles to express his own views about many world topics.

With all likelihood this question of who is the real Adam Warlock or should I say what is the real Adam Warlock will be a question I probably carry to my grave, never knowing just what Starlin might have been trying to reveal about the character.

But throughout the Adam Warlock title, this origin is hinted, even in cross-over issues. For example, his adventure in the Ultraverse, fighting against Rune, when it was revealed that even if Rune could defeat Adam Warlock, not even Rune was powerful enough to siphon the soul out of Warlock. Given this fact, Adam could never be just the product of the Beehive, he has to be something more. Even his closest sibling, Kismet is nothing like Adam Warlock other than they both can weave cocoons and both are blonde and have golden skin. This of course, might allude that the Beehive project was solely responsible for the physical characteristics that whatever Adam Warlock is... inhabits. His memory of what he was before is currently lost, so when he forced to recreate himself, he bases it solely on what the Enclave did at the beehive project. Of course, other indications of Adam being more than what he seems is scattered through his appearances in other titles, for example, to date Kismet has not showed the ability to manifest a staff from pure karmic energy as does Adam. Another is the admission by Mephisto admission he could not defeat Warlock, but due to the fact that Adam was in the possession of the Soul Gem at the time, some might argue that this was the basis of that statement.

I for one would like to see Jim Starlin get his hands on Adam Warlock again, it would be great to see what he can do with the character he has been so instrumental in development, even if he did not originally create the character himself. If he did, we would be on a wild ride in the Marvel Comics world, one that could change everything we know and reveal things we cannot even begin to imagine.

DOSBOX not just for games...

As most in the Linux community know... DOSBOX is an emulator that creates a DOS environment with the primary function is to play old DOS games under Linux. A good idea, because there are a lot of good old DOS games out there.

However, it is a full DOS environment, even if lacking some of the bundled programs that make up DOS. However, most can be downloaded from the net. The end result is a quite good general purpose DOS emulator. I love it because it allows me to use some of my old DOS programs under Linux. I am easily fire up Turbo C++ or QBasic for writing some old code. Good practice at writing programs with all the easy help available to you. Something that a lot of modern IDE environments lack.

Of course, no serious programming is done in BASIC, but call me nostalgic and sometimes I just like playing around in the QBasic programming environment to see what unique processing algorithm I can develop. Of course, I could just as easily dust off my old 386SX and start it up, but that would be inconvenient for a number of reasons. 1. Where would I put it; 2. I have to replace the hard drive and 3. No networking or even a CD drive. So, yes that would be a project I should look into in the future. One of the main things about it is that I would like to see if I can get a good Flash solid state drive that would be IDE compatible with this old IDE specs of this system and would make the system much quieter and maybe a little faster. Of course DOS on this machine flies in any case. I used to run OS/2 Warp 3.0 on it. It has about 5MB of RAM, small by today's standards but adequate for running Warp 3 on a 386.

Anyway... back to track... DOSBOX allows me to run all these old nifty programs, allowing me to keep old school and new school on the same machine. To see the old Norton Programmer's Editor running again is great. In the old days, this was the Editor of choice if you were a programmer. Yes, there was other text editors but none anywhere close to this editor. Of course, you could have invested in an vi clone on DOS but, it would not be as small as NEDIT. NEDIT was great, as you can adapt it to any programming situation, including writing COBOL programs where you needed to start at particular character spacings for the program to be compiled properly, something that was not as easily implemented in other text editors.

Ok. I stop, as it seems that I am getting sidetracked with the nostalgia about my DOS programming days. So I just say, if you want a no problems DOS interface in this GUI world, DOSBOX might just be the ticket to get you back to good old dos, especially if you are not using Windows.

The role of Education is to prepare you for anything you might venture into in your life, so an exposure to all facets of learning gives you the opportunity to seek out and discover your potential. If Mr. Inshan "Jackass" Ishmael has his way, then we all would be manual labourers and toilet cleaners, so that jackasses like Mr. Ishmael would be the ones in power and influence to dictate the path of the evolution of the country.

Hello World C++ with Objects

Ok... this is a "Hello World" program in C++ using objects. It illustrates a number of aspects of object oriented programming in C++ allowing you to get a quickstart into C++ programming. First there is the #include directives which tells C++ that the program uses two libraries, iostream and string (actually they specify the header files that define the libraries to be used). "iostream" provides input/output to streams, in this case we are sending a stream to the console. "string" is a string type library that provide a string datatype that is not native to the base C++, this allows us to manipulate strings in an easy manner.

Class oHello is defined as having three methods, oHello method is the constructor that is executed when the object is created, ~oHello is the destructor that is executed when the program destroys the object (in this case, when the program terminates), lastly there is print which sends hstr to the output stream. These are declared as public so that they can be accessed from other modules in the program that are not members of the oHello object class. "hstr" is private to the class and only the class methods can access this data. It is of type string, the object string that was defined in the string class library.

The oHello method does one thing, assign hstr the value of "Hello World\n". "\n" means add a carriage return to the end of the string. Now, when any member methods access hstr it would contain the value "Hello World\n".

The print method contains the instruction cout << hstr, this calls the hstr object using the << method which directs it to send the value it contains to the cout stream class, which as stated earlier sends the data to the output stream.

Now that all the objects are defined... we can use them in the main() function which is automatically executed when the program is run. First we create an instance of the oHello object, called myObject. Next we call the print method of the myObject object, which prints "Hello World\n" to the output stream (in this case the console). Lastly since main() is a function it must return something before terminating, so we return the value zero.

Like all rexx programs, the main() like section is the beginning lines of the program. The object definitions begin after the main instruction sequence. In this case we have one object called "hello"

It contains two methods, a constructor and general purpose method named "print". Both objects share a variable common to the object called "hellostring", which contains the string we want the object to print. It is initially set by the constructor to the value "Hello World". The print method does only one thing, to print the value of the variable "hellostring" to the console.

So, here we have an illustration of using objects, methods, constructors and internal data passing between objects in a rexx program. (Note, I am not going into the details of what is object oriented programming, as if you reading this you should have already studied what is object oriented programming).

The beginning part of the program does two things, create an object named "myobject" of the type "hello" and initialize it. The second instruction calls the "print" method.

Pretty simple.

Hello World Gforth (better example)

One of the issues of most of the information out there with respect to the forth language (and this includes books) is the lack of a clear illustration of how to write a routine and call it in the program in a easy to understand manner. They show how to write a routine and call it from another routine but no one tells you where your main program should be to call all the functions... do you create an main() like routine, do you put the instructions at the beginning and the routines after, or do you define the routines and call them after.... most of the forth manuals seem to skip this part in clear english. I am not a anything like an experienced forth programmer, but like all experimental programmers, I am interested in all programming languages, including forth... while most of what I might do is in other languages, I would like to say that I know something of forth, but most of the information out there leaves a lot to be desired when you do not "know" forth.

Anyway this is my illustration of routine calls in a forth program. Ye old "Hello World" program. I believe all first "Hello World" program in any programming language should illustrate how routines (subroutines or functions) call called.

So what does this program do? First it defines a routine called "hello" that does only one thing, print the text string "Hello World" with a carriage return.

With respect to forth, the routine must be defined before being used, so it comes before any instruction that calls the routine. This is why the rest of the program follows the routine. BTW the routine definition is terminated by the semi-colon. (Note all colons and semi-colons are spaced away from any other element, as forth needs a space when parsing to determine it sytnax).

There is no main() like construct in forth, so the instructions are listed right after all routines are defined. We therefore have two instructions: "hello" and "bye". "hello" calls the hello routine and executes it before passing it off to the next instruction "bye" which in gforth tells the forth environment to terminate, exiting the program.

There you have it, a gforth "hello world" program that illustrates the use of routines in the source program.

Conrad Dippel, Frankenstein and Dracula

In a curious case of life imitating art, I learned today of a connection between Frankenstein and Dracula. As we know Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelly, as it turns out, the characterization of Victor Frankenstein might have been based on a man named Conrad Dippel. Johann Conrad Dippel was born in Germany in Frankenstein's Castle. He was involved with Alchemy, Science and was educated in Religion. He is infamous for some experiments he conducted with human bodies, at least so it been rumored. The interesting fact is that Frankenstein's Castle was home to the Von Frankenstein family in Germany, as it turns out, one member of this family, migrated to Transylvania and was partly responsibly for the building of Bran Castle. Unfortunately, he ended up in a feud with the local prince at the time, namely, Prince Vlad Tepes (aka Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula), which lead to his death by impalement. So here we have real history, illustrating a connection with the name Frankenstein (and a member of that family) with Count Dracula. An amazing fact, knowing the connection in modern fiction between the fictitious characters in horror that are based on these two names and people; Frankenstein and Dracula.

Stuff that we do not read about often...

Any of us who are Star Trek fans have always believed that the technology of star trek is possible, even though countless others have said it is not. Yet, as science proves, such phenomena is not without some scientific merit.

Take the concept of the Alcubierre Drive and a modification of the theory called the Krasnikov Tube. Both theories show the possibility that the laws of nature do allow the creation of drives that can accomplish the same effects as a Star Trek's Warp drive. Yes, there are arguments against them, but these arguments are all based on one assumption that we cannot build or control a device capable of such phenomenon. Such thinking is backward thinking assuming current knowledge of technology, who to say what knowledge we gain in the future (should we survive) that would allow us to use or build devices to accomplish these theories. As such we cannot assume that warp technology would never exit. It does not exist now, that much we can surely say and it may not exist for generations. But can one day we make such a thing.... We cannot say no we never will or yes.... it might very well come to be.

Another interesting subject is Eugene Podkletnov while being ridiculed by many, he may have a substantial point in his pursuit of gravitational manipulation, which is a predicted effect of aspects of superconductivity under certain conditions. Why are we so quick to label him a crackpot just because the media wants to shove the term "anti-gravity" upon him and all the nonsense pseudo science in attempt to make him one of those. The fact is he might have accomplished a phenomena that will gain us knowledge into the behavior of gravitational forces, if at least it gives us a better understanding of gravity even if a propulsion system is too far fetched. We should not discount an qualified scientific theory without using Occam's Razor and verifiable data and not by our prejudices.

If you using MPlayer for the first time, you notice an error message where it says it cannot find subfont.ttf, to solve this problem you can either copy a truetype font to the ./mplayer directory and rename it to subfont.ttf, edit the mplayer configuration file with "font=" with the path to a particular font, or just create a symbolic link.

To create a symbolic link, first you need to know where the font you want to use is located, lets say we want to use a Times font so we do a locate command to find the font path...

~>locate Times.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/TSCu_Times.ttf

Notice it responded with the location of a font, in my case... /usr/share/fonts/truetype/TSCu_Times.ttf now to create a symbolic link (symlink), we go into the mplayer configuration directory.

~./mplayer>

Now we can create the symlink using the ln command. The syntax to use is "ln -s source target" where source is the location of the file and target is the symlink you want to create.

~./mplayer>lm -s /usr/share/fonts/truetype/TSCu_Times.ttf subfont.ttf

done... your Mplayer would now run without asking for any subfont.ttf and it would use the font you specified for its use.

Batch downloading with REXX and WGET

Recent news, I had to reinstall SUSE linux on my 64-bit PC. So this means I have to get my tools that I use often, including REXX scripts. Previously I used a REXX script for reading a text file and downloading a series of files based on a filter, such as files x001.jpg to x030.jpg. The script did it effectively but was not flexible. So I decided to make the next generation version of the script. One that can handle more complex download sequences without modifying the code.

I took the modular approach, separating the program into two parts, the core download processing script and a higher level simple file filtering script that offers the ease of use as my old script.

The new core script is flexible but uses a more complex syntax that is very linux like, taking s syntax as follows:

dlfiles --start n1 --stop n2 --lz n3 --dest s1 --src s2

where....
n1 says where to start its numeric counter for downloading
n2 says where to stop its numeric counter for downloading
n3 says to use leading zeros and how many to use... eg... 001 002 003 ... 099
s1 says to what directory to store the downloads
s2 is the source url of the downloads where the counting section is replaced with
a symbolic "~~"

Thus to download files x0001.txt to x0040.txt from a server the command to use would be

dlfiles --start 1 --stop 40 --lz 2 --src http://server/x00~~.txt

The second script called "getem" works by reading a specified text file and parsing the contents and then calling dlfiles with the correct parameters. Thus the file would contain records such as...
Docs 1, http://server1/doc~~.doc
Docs 2. http://server2/text~~.odt

It uses the dlfiles default settings... starting with 1 and ending with 30, no leading zeros but tells it to store the files in the Docs 1 and Docs 2 folders, if these folders do not exist, they are created by the download program WGET, of which it is dependent for downloading.

The main error that I got from this script was the limited parsing ability of REXX and its inability to handle parameters with spaces even if delimited by quotation marks, which resulted in that I had to create my own parsing code.

The end result is the following two programs that would be listed. Of course, the usual copyright notices require giving me credit if any of it is used for your legal purposes. If illegal, please do not include me in your illicit activities.

Btw. Why do I use REXX instead of sh or perl or python? Simple, I am an old OS/2 user, and a lot of the REXX programming I learned then is still my mainstay, as a result I install REXX on any computer I am using, including Windows and Linux machines. I currently use and support Open Object Rexx, as this is the direct IBM descendant as that was used on the OS/2 PCs and the OS/400 minicomputers.

My personal opinion on using Gloss paper for photo printing. A lot of people swear by some of this products but in my opinion they are crap and worthless and may cause more harm to your printer than they are worth.

My top worse ranked gloss paper is
Kodak Gloss double sided paper. Chances of getting a jam or something caught in your printer is high.
Second is Epson, some people say this is the best Gloss paper on the market. In one word that is CRAP. It jams and you can only print one page at a time or it will stick to any paper under the page and both paper would be pulled into your printer, not to mention the jamming issues.

My top best gloss paper...
HP Premium Gloss, never a problem in my printer (HP 6127).
Ilford Gallerie Professional Smooth Gloss. I am stunned by the output quality using this paper, and not a jam, and I do not have to empty the paper bin to print a single photo.

Declaration of my search for my Ideal Mate

There comes an age when you become self actualized what you really want in life. What you are willing to sacrifice and what you are not willing to sacrifice to get what you want in life via romance.

One of the main things about me is that I am compelled to follow my ideals, which includes what I look for in a woman. They are admittedly high ideals that few women would ever be worthy to fill, even fewer who would be willing to fall in love with me. But the truth is I have no desire to give into my ideals. Even if it means I never meet the right person in my life.

There is only one person that meets my ideals right now. My best friend Sherry. But that would never work out. I know this, as much as I know she never look at me the same way I look at her. She the closest to my ideal of the perfect mate. Everything I look for, a heart that sees not with her eyes, a mind that thinks much like I do. A spirit that is warm at times even though she might be feeling cold. Of course there is her beauty as well. No, she not the Hollywood type, but she is beautiful. All the characteristics both internal and external that I would ever want in a woman.

Coming to learn of myself I realized that I want no other woman but a woman like her. I am not willing to sacrifice that ideal, even if it means I never marry or love another woman in my life. I can imaging what she say if she saw I said this... that I should not be so strict and selective on what I am looking for... But, I must follow my heart on this, because I do not need a woman for sex. I need my ideal companion. Someone that excites me on all levels, my soul, my mind and my body. Otherwise, I much prefer to remain alone for the rest of my life. I need nothing else in a woman.

I have allowed myself to comprises what I could get in the past, all of which were doomed to failure. I do not desire to comprises those ideals again. Either I find her or I don't, or she finds me. They say there is a perfect person for everyone out there. I do not believe that is totally true, but I do know some might come very close to my dream, my ideal. I can only hope that she looks for someone like me too. Otherwise, love is just not worth perusing. Why settle for second best? The fact is second best I would never be able to honor her. She could never by my princess or my queen.

I know now what it is I want in a woman. What is it that I am looking for, what she might even look like in a general sense. Yes, this probably narrows the population of women down to 0.01% of all the women in the world. But so what.... this is what I want, and I am not willing to give into getting anything less than my ideal.

Sherry would have been my perfect mate, but I know that would never be. But at least she has shown me what I want and now that I know who I am, and my compulsive idealistic characteristics and my unwillingness to give up on those ideals and not willing to settle for anything less. I know that and accept that my road to finding my ideal mate will be a long one, one that probably I never find. But I am not unhappy if I do not find anyone. I am only unhappy because the right ones have never found me.

I do not know who going through a more difficult time... me or my friend (the one I blogged about). Maybe I am not the only one who is feeling cold inside of late. Maybe we both are... What I do know is she is colder to me now, and I am struggling at keeping my word and being a friend. I not told her just how I am right now, nor do I want to tell her. I do not feel I need to share this with her, because she has enough and it not for her to carry. But I think (and I may be wrong) that we both at a point where the delicate fabric of all that been crafted in the past of our friendship might just break down and crumble away forever. I know now just what Alice Cooper song Poison is... I feel it every day. How do you be friends with someone you want in the deepest part of your core? I do not know, I am like a moth attracted to a flame. As I get close I will be consumed by the fire, yet I cannot help but fly towards it. It is hard to be best friends to someone that you want, knowing that they never will want you.

Mostly I am ok. I handle it very well. I am very much strong and it does not affect me. The problem arises when I speak to her... At first I thought I just walk away, it would be the best thing, I would heal. But she is the best thing that ever walked into my life, a friend I could never turn my back towards.

My life is very interesting... Indeed the old Chinese proverb curse rings true with me. May you live in interesting times.... a curse that indeed beings me to wonder how cursed am I. This night was one that seems everything happens. My sister moved out today, my best friend whom I love finally broke my heart and my spirit, and now my cousin just died. Interesting indeed.

I once believed that maybe I was spiritually related to death, now I think that might be very true. These things happen every time my heart and soul is broken. Something bad happens... events happen. The world is never the same.

Love just drives me crazy. It always breaks my heart. I am in love with my best friend, a woman that is so wonderful in so many ways, but who could never think of my as anything but her best friend and confidant. I know everything about her, including some intimate details that few if any are allowed to know. Yet, she never have the same feelings. I've come to realize that love can be such a complex creature that I envy those who have a easier time with it. I've learned that confession is not good for the soul either. Where one time my friend would trust me to be nude before me and allow me to take pictures of her, now I fear that she never think of doing that again, now that she knows how I feel. While we still friends, I doubt we will ever be the same, maybe I should have kept my feelings and mouth shut. I've made the biggest screwup with her by telling her. I know this, even if she still says we are friends. I know she may never trust me as before. Before, she would have trusted maybe even sleeping in the same bed with me, knowing I would not do anything that she didn't wanted, now she might be afraid of doing so. Although I not changed and will always be a person of my word, of my heart and my honor. I know it will never be the same. I was stupid, I confessed my heart and know now that was probably the worse thing I could have done.

I didn't know it existed and surprised that my blogs are listed on a fantasy blog stock market. Interesting since I did not give my permission for it to be used in that market. It not a big deal, as long as no one is really making money off of my work. Otherwise, they would need a swift kick in the arse and I would then want my share.

IE7 Sucks

Ok I finally decided to install IE7 RC1..... aside from the ugly bar at the top, a very annoying feature popped up. AOL Explorer (which I sometimes use) uses IE as its rendering engine, it however crashes with IE7 installed. I do not know if it a problem interfacing with IE7 or that IE7 is at fault. In either case, it does not work. I admit I use Firefox and Opera far more often and AOL explorer sometimes and never (NEVER) use IE as a web browser. So, whatever case, IE7 seems useless to me.

Thus in the final result... IE7 sucks and a useless piece of crap. It now been uninstalled and I returned to using IE6.... Now if only AOL would start using the mozilla engine, then I would be happy and let IE in all its various incarnations bite the dust.

How many times have it been proven and said by unbiased analysis that the true homeland of the aryan people is central asia. YES... Central fucking Asia! You heard me right! Asia. USB Headphones

Ok, USB headphones are a pain in the ass.

They say XP with Service Pack 2 suppose to support it.... yet, I have XP, service pack 2 installed and yet I can't use USB headphones... it says that the driver cannot be found. It's a logitech USB headphone, so I wrote the company, expecting a little help to solve the problem.... that was over a week ago and not a single reply. I still have to see if it will work with my linux machine. But generally my experience with it on XP is a total waste of time (I am being polite). So here are the lies that are going around.

1. All versions of XP with Service Pack 2 supports USB headsets... FALSE
2. You can get support from Microsoft... FALSE. My version of XP is an OEM which Microsoft says they will not support unless you pay them.
3. You get support from Logitech... FALSE. I love logitech products more than Microsoft but this experience has taught me they are as much fucking assholes as Microsoft.
4. If a company says it will work, chances are it might work but only if you fall into a specific margin of the population.

Damn usless technology company idiots.

Crimes, where the punishment should be death!

Ok, yes I support the death penality... but what crimes I believe should require it? Here is my list.

First Degree Murder - Obviously if you set out to kill someone, be it in a crime in itself or during the process of committing another crime, once it not proven to be accidential or in self defence, that person should be terminated.
Kidnapping - The taking of another person against their will for any illigal reason (ransom, etc) is grounds for the kidnapper to be terminated.
Terrorism - If they plan on doing something which cause mass fear, deaths or any other action, they should be terminated.
Human Trafficing - About 900,000 people are trafficed across international borders every year, excuding those trafficed internally within a country. It is one of the most overlooked crimes globally. Those who should be execuited should be anyone involved in the business. It is a very sad state of affairs that such crimes as this even exists.

Well that is my short list.... there are other crimes that should be included but I can't think of any more right now. I do not believe that politicial crimes and most crimes against the state warrent the death penality, most can be handled with imprisionment.

No doubt a longer more detailed list needs to be done.... and maybe I do it sometime...

But that my opinion.

I previously wrote a similar rexx program such as this one... but this one is a little better than my previous one.... It still has crude error handling so it not meant for the layman to use but someone who knows what they doing. Essentially it does one function, download a number of files that contain some sequence numbering... 01 02 03 04.... etc....

Anyway here the code.... It will work on any system that has access to the *nix command wget. Under windows you will need cygwin. Under Linux you will need (obviously) REXX, you can get it from oorexx.org.

The past couple of days since joining MySpace I have found one friend I thought I lost... well I am hoping it is her and she be online soon, I've not talked with her yet. Who is it? Why my special friend from back in the Immortal Society days, one Electrick Rain... someone who I cared and liked a lot back then, even if she was too young for me. But that does not mean she and I could not be friends and we were. I thought I lost her, lost contact with her. I thought she was gone and I would never hear from her again. But it seems I have found her. She is one of the friends I have missed a lot. I can't wait till she on again.... but I have no choice but to wait....

Don't get me wrong, I know not to expect anything other than her acknowledging an old friend. But at least I fond her. So many questions.... did she miss me? I don't know.... I have to wait and see.
